Wow -- HAWC actually has more than 40 people keyed for Ony! That's great news!
Prior to our Onyxia attempt we had one last UBRS run to get Thwak and Trolloc their Drakk blood. I bailed after Rend to get Shamu into the raid for more healing -- for some reason Mud didn't want to heal solo on Drakk. Wuss!
It took us a long time to get under way last night. We didn't even fully zone in until after 8:00PM.
The four dragonkin leading to Ony are pushovers. We downed them with no problem.
For setup we had Sol MTing. Odd numbered groups were on the left, even numbered groups on the right. Groups 7 and 8 were whelp groups and consisted of a priest, a warrior, 2 mages, and I think a shaman each.
First Try:
Our first attempt we made it through Phase I with no trouble at all. Everyone kept their DPS low and steady. Phase II killed us. It's one thing to read about the whelps and another to experience them for the first time. The right side whelps broke into two groups and Mak couldn't get them all so I ran over and corralled the strays to bring them back. By the time I got them to the cave mouth, Mak was dead. There we just a couple left and were easily handled. Things weren't going so well on the left side. When the right was clear they still had a ton of whelps left and I think Firebella, PF, and Aredhel were all down. I ran over to help and pretty much died immediately. With no mages and whelps running rampant our first attempt ended with Ony at about 56%. It didn't help that several people were having connection issues and at anyone point 1-3 people were LD.
Second Try:
Holy cow, that is one long corpse run!
Again, cleared to Ony without any trouble. Phase I went just as smoothly as the first time. This time we had Phase II down. No deep breaths and the whelps were handled. Phase III kicked our butts. Sol had trouble getting agg and in the process Ony was thrashing about and took out over half the right side. I don't know what shape the left was in but we were in trouble. That attempt ended with Ony at about 25%.
Third Try:
Phase I, no problem. Phase II we had some trouble. The whelps were handled okay but people were bunching up big time. At one point I ran into range and stopped in a clear spot. Before I was done casting my first frostbolt there was a hunter, a mage, and two warlocks clustered around me. Needless to say, Deep Breath hammered the crap out of us. I ended up biting it but got a combat rezz and joined the fight again. I lucked out and found a spot where the fear never sent me through a lava slash -- it just ran me into the wall, out about 3 steps, then back into the wall. We lost a lot of people in Phase II. When Phase III hit we had about 1/3 of the raid standing. Sol/Ryndstrum were able to get control much sooner this time. I noticed her position was off from where she was in Phase I. She was crowded on the right side and as a result the even groups didn't have much room between the whelp cave and her head. When she moved at all to the right we had no place to go and took massive fire damage. That's what ultimately killed me. With Ony at 25% about 3/4 of the raid was down. However, those that were up were holding their own. They hung in and slowly whittled her down. Someone called for Shaman to auto-attack while healing. Not sure if it was just coincidence or if it was the cause but Sol died seconds later. About that time I auto-released. On my run back the raid finally wiped with Ony at about 14%. If we hadn't clumped up in Phase II and been able to position Ony more to the center in Phase III we'd have had her for sure.
Couple of things to take away from last night:
First, overall we did really well for only a handful of us ever having actually seen Ony before.
Second, we need to be a lot better about not clumping up in Phase II.
Third, we need to let the warriors in the whelp groups get a little quality time. We learned this after the first attempt and never really had a problem with it on the second and third attempts.
Fourth, we need to pay a little more attention to her positioning in Phase III.
Onyxia still lives. An event to remedy that is posted for this Sunday on the calendar.
P.S. I originally posted the event on June 4th by mistake. That event has been deleted. If you signed up for that event, please make sure you signed up for the corrected event on May 28th.
