Tab Targeting and Extended Range Talents: A PvE Con?

I was trying out my new priest build, which includes Shadow Reach, and I noticed something that I have noticed before with my hunter and mage. All three have talents that extend the range of their ranged attacks, but the reach of tab targeting seems always be less than the extended range offered by the talents. For example, the tab targeting appears to have a range of around 30-34 yards, because I have to keep "inching" forward before acquiring the target, yet I can always step back after acquiring a target and still keep it within range.

What really brought this to mind is my standard priest PvE attack:
    1. Tab target acquisition
    2. Mind Blast
    3. SW:P
    4. Mind Flay incoming target

I noticed that only when at the maximum 36 yard range would the full duration of the Mind Flay take effect. At the tab targeted range, I would be hit by a melee attacker before Mind Flay finished.

Has anyone else noticed this? If this is true, then a PvE leveling build would not need as many talent points in extended range talents.

I havent tried this myself but maybe view distance needs to be increased also in video settings? That's the first thing that popped into my head.

    All video settings are maxed.

I'm going to see if I can get some more specific numbers. This was something that occured to me as I was driving to work this morning and I thought I'd toss it out for comment.

I'm going to investigate this setting in the config.wtf file: TargetNearestDistance. It appears to be adjustable and the default has been mentioned as 20 or 41 (yards).
