What is the reason to delete the WDB and WTF directories? Doing so seems to have messed up all my settings (can't tell for sure until we can log in, of course) so unless there is a compelling reason it will save a lot of time to leave them alone.

The WTF folder contained all the saved variables for all the mods you use as well as the Blizzard default UI elements. The WDB folder, if I remember correctly, is the cache folder for textures and items etc. Moving them so new settings are created is generally a Good Thing when there are significant changes to the game. Especially considering the sheer amount of items that have been/will be altered some issues may arise with the cached data.

I, for one, am not looking forward to re-doing all the chat settings and I am hoping to move the affected files back in after initial launch of the new version.

OK, if you need to move them to get new settings created, then won't moving them back mess things up? Now I'm even more confused... :(

He means moving back the files inside of them. Inside of those folders are files used to make the addons work. Atlas maps, gatherer locations, auctioneer prices, things like that, some you *MAY* be able to move back, some may not be encoded correctly for the newer versions of the addons. Be cautious moving files as some may cause more issues then say just rescanning the AH for Auctioneer....

Exactly. Being systematic and moving them back in place one by one to hopefully preserve as much of the settings I currently have as possible. I fully expect some failures but if I can save some effort it will work out in the end. I am more inclined to use Beyond Compare to sync the old to the new than I am to re-create everything from scratch. That's the advantage to letting the new settings be created when launching the game.

Some stuff I am not to concerned about. I mistakenly deleted a lot of stuff a few months back when I un-installed the game and wasn't paying attention when the un-installer asked what stuff to leave behind. I was a very sad monkey that day. Two years of Auctioneer/LootLink data down the drain.

Yes, yes we do... is it weird I have my backup software include my WoW folder?
