From WoW General official forum - took me forever to find it, they need to post this stuff in WoW Realm Status.
Blackhand is slated to be down for 36 hours total - coming back up at Noon on Wednesday the 12th.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

We are moving forward on our hardware retrofits in preparation for the upcoming release of the Burning Crusade expansion and would like to inform everyone of our current schedule. Due to the requirements for implementing this new hardware, some realms may find they will be down for an extended period of time. During this time paid character transfers will be disabled.

Due to the nature of these hardware upgrades, we’re unable to preserve the friends and ignore list for characters on these realms. We recommend that players take the necessary steps to back up this information, and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work to improve realm performance and stability through our continued hardware upgrade plans.

You note that they cant preserve friends and ignore and you should take action to write that information down. However as near as I can tell, this message was posted AFTER the servers were down, exactly how did they think we were going to take action?

The message announcing the servers being down and to save your friends and ignore lists was on the login page on Monday.

I skip the log on page, but regardless what happens if you weren't on Monday (I wasn't for example). I had no chance to capture that info.

Personally it doesn't matter to me, I know who was in my lists (I generally clear ignore after awhile). Just pointing out that it could have been handled better. :)

Oh, no doubt about that. All I was doing was correcting the notion that they didn't announce this before the server shutdown. The night before is hardly enough warning, but then losing friends and ignore lists is hardly catastrophic. If it were losing our incoming mail, for example, it would probably be much more important to give adequate notice.

I was goiong off the copied post that started it. In the wow forums the post (a copy of which appears at the start of this thread), was date time stamped as 2 hours after the server went down. So if you hadnt logged in (To see on the login page, I had not), the post in the forum was after the fact.

Even if you did log in and see the post there wasn't a huge amount of warning.

It's real easy when you have no friends :)

Yeah, but what about all the people who have to remember to put you on ignore again? :P
