Banner night for HAWC with the killing of Ragnaros and Onyxia within an hour of each other. With the downing of Rags HAWC has successfully conquered all high-end content originally released with World of Warcraft. Tier 2 legs and helms to be had!
Our MC pace was near vengeful. Although it didn't intentionally start out that way. We pulled the first two giants like normal. When the first supposedly Firelord was pulled we somehow got the giants waaaayyyyy behind it. We killed that pull and Rehab (I think) immediately pulled the double firelords on the other side of the bridge. Having just fought five mobs without a mana break the mages (and I'm sure the other casters as well) looked at our empty mana bars and said a quick "oh, crap!" Evocation and mana rubies FTW!
Our pace slowed a bit after that but not by much. Domo died at 7:34PM, one hour and thirty-four minutes after we were scheduled to zone in.
All the guilds in HAWC came prepared and brought it strong. People found DPS they didn't know they had. For the first time in memory the top three DPSers did not have a huge lead over the rest of the field. Everyone that showed up came to play. I could tell the DPS was strong. I'd stop to loot a trash mob and be two pulls behind the raid.
In addition to the massive DPS, the guilds came well stocked. Just adding up the fire protection potions mentioned in the officer's channel there was over 400 potions available to the raid. Jabber and a team hit Scholo before the raid and brewed up some flasks. Several people got Arcanum of Resilience for added FR just before the raid. A number of people brought vials and supplies for alchemists to make potions as we assembled.
Sulfuron, Golemagg, and Domo were barely bumps in the road for the wrecking crew that hit MC.
We went to UBRS and got the Spellbinder FR buffs. While this helped, I'd love to see us wean ourselves off it as quickly as possible if for no other reason than the time it takes. All in all from the time we killed Domo to the time we engaged Rags was almost an hour - nearly as long as it took to reach and kill Golemagg.
Once in position the ranged DPS unleashed hell. With 6 hunters, 6 mages, and 5 warlocks we had a ton of long range killing power. It showed. When the sons appeared we had Rags at 28% -- far better than any of our previous attempts in their entirety. The sons were a little sloppy but we had them all killed before Rags emerged and only lost 2-3 people in the process. With Rags back on the scene we again lit him up. He was done within a minute of showing his ugly mug the second time.
In the process, Sol was able to complete part of his quest for Thunderfury. One step closer for him. Kulgar got his final Ingot for the HE legendary quest line.
With a fair amount of adrenaline flowing and an hour left to us, we decided Onyxia could hardly affort to live. I had reservations. I was concerned people would be so jazzed up from the Rags kill that aggro control would be difficult if not impossible. While I did notice DPS was faster than normal, it was kept in check.
When phase II hit we managed to spread out enough and keep the DPS going sufficiently that we didn't have a single deep breath.
The only problem came in phase III when Sol was having trouble establishing aggro. Ony flopped around and generally made positioning on the east side nearly impossible.
All in all, a great night.
